READING is one of communication media to increase our knowledge. It has been part of people’s life in developed countries such as the USA, the UK, Germany and Japan. What about us?

IT IS TRUE we are different from those countries in terms of culture. But, we have to imitate their reading habit if we want to join those countries in this globalization era. If not, we are getting farther behind them.

I HAVE BEEN traveling to some big cities in Sumatera and Java. To my great disappointment, I find teenegers and yong people wasting their time hanging around in plazas, dischoteqes, or other entertainment centers. They do not use their time for their benefits such as reading, playing sports and other advantageous activities. I never find libraries ful of people in the cities I visited. Book shop is not a popular place for us, either.

IS THER something wrong with us? How could we obtain knowledge in this information era in which everything move fast, if we have this kind of lifestyle. I do not think television can provide enough information for us.

FURTHERMORE, I am really shocked when I read news saying our students only study when facing axams. Those students spend their time for sleeping (10-12 hours), watching TV and chatting. They rarely read their textbook, not even newspapers, magazines, or novels. They tend to be passive.

THE PROBLEM is we are running out of time. We have to change this situation. Parents, teachers, society and government should work hadr to find the solution. We cannot leave our young generation wasting their time. Reading habit has to be introduced in the early age. This is the first phase of learning process.

RECENTLY I always find the buzzing word “Human Resources Development” (HRD) everywhere. It is nonsense unless we have a good reading habit. The essence of HRD is on going learning process. It is not a week, a month or a year HRd course, but for good. In conclusion, we could catch up with the developed countries if reading habit becomes part of our life.
